School Information - Uniforms

Policy (October 2005)
School uniform at Caulfield Junior College is compulsory. Your child is requested to wear it for the following reasons:
• The school uniform helps to promote a strong sense of unity and instils in students pride in themselves and their school.
• School uniform minimises “clothing fads”.

• School uniform is cost effective. A wide variety of uniform garments are available at Caulfield Junior College.

Art Smocks are compulsory wear for students in the Junior School (Prep to Year 2) during art and craft activities. They are also highly recommended for students in the senior school. Art smocks are not provided by the school and must be supplied by parents. Art smocks are available from the Uniform Shop (see order form for size). These have an acrylic backing that prevents seepage of paints, adhesives and food dyes onto clothing. Many substances used at school can cause permanent staining so an art smock is a wise investment!

School bags are an optional purchase from the Uniform Shop but highly recommended. These are ergonomically designed and competitively priced. The 23 L bags have an exterior water bottle holder, adjustable shoulder straps, handles, strong zippers and easy clean fabric.

Navy rain jackets may also be ordered from the Uniform Shop. The jackets do not have a school logo. The jacket is lined, has a hood, plenty of pockets and folds compactly. Samples are available to select correct sizing.

Shoes: Black or navy leather, non-slip shoes are preferred but sport shoes are also permitted. Sandals that protect the toes may be worn in hot weather. Thongs are not permitted at school.

Socks: White or navy socks or tights should be worn with the school uniform.

Hair: It is highly recommended that long hair be tied back for safety reasons and to help prevent head lice infestation.

A Satchel (book bag) is a highly recommended purchase. The satchel is used 'to transport safely' library books, readers, school newsletters and student work between school and home. Satchels may be purchased from the Front Office (see order form for prices) during school hours.

Emergency clothing is available if your child has an accident or illness at school. Our supplies are limited however! If your child has the occasional accident, a change of clothing (kept in your child’s schoolbag) would be a wise precaution. Please wash and return emergency clothing promptly. Other children are in need of it too!

The SEEMORE Traffic Buddy Safety Garment is a high visibility safety accessory being sold mainly through schools to keep the cost to parents as low as possible. Early-primary students are being encouraged to wear the safety accessory if walking or riding a bicycle to school as well as on school excursions. Young children are still learning to cross roads; mistakes are made and the high visibility of the SEEMORE Traffic Buddy offers motorists that much more time to react and avoid an accident. It is also terrific for high visibility in outdoor sports such as bicycling, riding a scooter or in-line skating. It is quick to put on and comfortable to wear. The reflective tape on the garment is the same quality as that used by the police and other emergency services. Order forms are available from the Uniform Shop display counter. Primary size fits children from 5 – 9 years of age (see order form for prices).

Purchasing Uniform
School uniform may be purchased personally at the Uniform Shop. During term, the shop is open each Wednesday from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Payment may be made using cash, cheque, credit card or eftpos.

School uniform may also be ordered by using the Uniform Shop Order Form (See Forms/Brochures web page). Orders are regularly filled during the week and delivered to your child’s class. Orders may also be collected from the Front Office.

Payment must accompany your order form. Order forms and payment may be left with your child’s teacher or at the Front Office. Order forms can be downloaded from the Forms/Brochures web page and are available from the Uniform Display counter (located near the Front Office) in the senior building.

The Uniform Shop sells second hand uniform garments that have been donated to the school. It is a good idea to drop by regularly to find a bargain! A Second Hand Sales Notice Board is located next to the Uniform Display counter. This is available for parents to sell second-hand uniform garments. Please note that our shop can only accommodate two helpers at any time so there may be a lengthy wait in Term one and Term four for advice or to purchase goods. We do not have facilities for students to try on uniform.

On orientation days the Uniform Shop is closed. Volunteers are available to provide advice on uniform selection and sizing. Uniforms can be ordered and paid for at the Front Office. You will be contacted when your order is ready to be collected from the Front Office. There may be several weeks' delay in receiving some ordered items therefore we recommend that orders are made at the Front Office by mid November. This also allows time to change sizes or garments if required.  Please note: During the first week of Term 1, the Uniform Shop is usually open every day from 9:00 – 10:00 am. The shop is typically closed during the last week of Term 4 and during school holidays.

Exchanging Uniforms
Uniform purchases may be exchanged up to two weeks after you receive them. Leave the garment with your receipt and a note indicating what you would rather have at the Front Office. The exchanged items will be delivered to your child’s class. If money is owed to the school, then items will need to be paid for and collected from the Front Office. Please note that exchange is only possible if the garment is in the same condition as at the time of purchase. It must be returned with original packaging and tags attached, no iron-on labels or names written on labels. We will not accept garments for exchange if you have stained them or they are covered in lint or hair! Uniform items that are found to have a manufacturing fault will be replaced if repairs cannot be made. A receipt is required to indicate when the item was purchased.

Labeling Uniforms
It is important that all uniform garments are labeled with your child’s first name, surname and learning area to ensure their prompt return! Sew-on labels and iron-on labels are preferred. The ink from laundry markers tends to fade with washing and needs to be touched up regularly.

Please label all lunch boxes, drink bottles, satchels and school bags! Lost property areas are located in the junior and senior buildings. It is recommended both areas be checked when hunting for lost belongings. The Uniform Shop regularly returns labelled lost property to its owners. If you have lost something that is unlabelled and cannot be found please leave a note at the Front Office.

Washing Uniforms
To retain the “as new” appearance of your child’s uniform it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions as stated on the label. To extend the useful life of your child’s uniform:
• dissolve your detergent in water before adding clothing;
• do up any buttons, snaps or zips prior to washing;
• wash garments inside out;
• wash uniform with other fabrics of similar weight to avoid excessive pilling and wear;
• Avoid overloading your washing machine;
• wash dark colours separately from light colours;
• use the recommended settings (eg gentle cycle, warm wash); and
• Dry garments inside out and in the shade to minimise fading. Chlorine bleach is not recommended. The uniform fabrics will discolour and the school logo will fade. Art smocks and raincoats should never be washed or soaked in any form of bleach. Wash these garments in COLD water only.

Your Support is Important
The Uniform Shop is assisted by parents who volunteer their time to help you, the school and your children.
• Volunteer labour results in much lower prices than you would otherwise expect, experience, expect to pay.
• A small profit is made from shop sales. Profits are used by the school to provide equipment, or to improve facilities, for your children.
• Time and money are saved by not having to shop around for uniform.
• School dress standards are maximised by students wearing garments from one source (ie the Uniform Shop) because it results in a more consistent appearance.
• Our suppliers provide high quality, durable uniform garments at competitive prices. They also provide excellent support services.
• Donated second-hand uniform is provided to students of needy families. Donated uniform is also washed and labelled and used as emergency clothing for your children in the event of accident or illness. Excess second-hand uniform clothing is sold and profits used by the school.
